2014 Abreu, Las Posadas, Howell Mountain

David Abreu is the gold standard of viticultural practice in California. The majority of the great modern Napa wineries (planted from the 1980s onwards) have David’s name on them; from planning to execution to maintenance, nobody does it like David. Over the years in the process of seeking out and planting sites for wealthy, passionate and top-quality minded future vineyard owners, David has found a few special sites - some of which he keeps to himself. Abreu farms around 80 acres of vines in 4 prime locations throughout the Valley: Madrona Ranch and Capella, both of which are found in and around the town of St Helena (around two-thirds of the way up the Valley at the foot of Spring Mountain), Thorevilos, which is a collection of hillside plots to the east of the other sites level with St Helena, and Las Posadas which is further up the hillside on Howell Mountain. Words can hardly describe the natural beauty of these vineyard sites. Of these sites only a tiny fraction is actually reserved for David’s own label wines – the rest are sold to the biggest and greatest names of the region for the highest grape prices in Napa. David’s winemaker is Brad Grimes. This trained chef has worked across the spectrum of David’s business but his naturally calm, analytical but creative mind led him to winemaking. Brad’s task is to make sure the finished wines express the unique sites on which these incredible grapes grow.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95 LP

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Las Posadas Proprietary Red opens with tons of wild blueberry, mulberries and cassis notes over garrigue, sage, baking spices and dusty soil plus touches of Black Forest cake and cedar. The rich, full-bodied palate is rugged, muscular, lively and concentrated with firm, grainy tannins, finishing very long and earthy.

A big, inward wine, the 2014 Howell Mountain is totally closed in on itself. There is plenty of Howell Mountain personality and structure, but not much else. It will be interesting to see how things develop here. Today the 2014 is painfully young and austere, as young Howell Mountain wines often are. Crushed rocks, gravel, melted road tar, lavender, cloves linger in the empty glass. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 14% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec and 6% Merlot.

Abreu is now calling his vineyard on Howell Mountain (a tract of 33 acres with 15 planted) Las Posadas, after the road high on the mountain that seems to be the Fifth Avenue of Howell Mountain vineyard sites. The 2014 Las Posadas Proprietary Red displays terrific fruit, forest floor, charcoal, coffee bean, vanilla, and spice box, but also the tell-tale mulberry and black fruits that come from this high-elevation site. Rich, juicy and succulent, it will be far more drinkable at an earlier age than either the 2013 or 2015, although both of them have more of a “wow” factor than the 2014 does – but that’s splitting hairs.
