Stellenbosch stalwart Kanonkop is one of South Africa’s top wine estates, situated on the foothills of the dramatic Simonsberg mountain. This fourth-generation family estate produces only red wine, with a single-minded focus that can be compared to the classed growths of Bordeaux. 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the first wines produced bearing the Kanonkop label.
In this time, the estate has had just three winemakers – Jan “Boland” Coetzee (rugby legend as well as oenology graduate), Beyers Truter (responsible for introducing the now iconic Paul Sauer Bordeaux-style blend), and Abrie Beeslaar (who took over in 2003 and celebrates twenty years at Kanonkop this year).
Paul Sauer is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, grown principally on decomposed granite soils, and aged for 24 months in 100% new oak. It is named after Kanonkop’s “founding father”, and 1981 was the first vintage.
