Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru was out of sorts from barrel. I could not make head nor tail of it and, as I wrote then, cast doubt on how representative it was. It has a beguiling bouquet with classically styled red berry fruit laced with undergrowth and light marine influences. Beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. Fresh and almost citric in style, yet there is weight and depth here, bright with blood orange and pain d'épices notes towards the finish. It needs a couple of years in bottle to gain refinement and I am sure it will. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
