The 2021 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a sultry backward bouquet with peony and violet scents infusing the dark berry fruit. Nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a Pommard-like reserve and pastille-like dark fruit laced with blue fruit towards the finish, though without the complexity of the previous vintage. Fine.
