2009 Domaine Georges Roumier, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru, Les Amoureuses

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is fabulous. The warmth of the year has given the Amoureuses a little more volume than normal, but without robbing it of its essential character. The 2009 possesses stunning depth in all dimensions backed up by the silkiest of tannins. This is a great showing from Christophe Roumier.

Outstanding. Here the stem influence is less obvious though the floral component remains quite strong with a highly spiced nose of violet, rose petal and plum that introduces rich and highly seductive flavors that brim with a more than sufficient amount of dry extract to coat the palate. The ultra-elegant and hugely long finish is shaped by extremely fine tannins and the '09 Amoureuses is class in a glass. A remarkable effort. Drink: 2024+

Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. Ethereal transparency and delineation on the nose, the terroir really showing through with scents of limestone, morning dew, a touch of fresh strawberry and redcurrant. The palate is very focused with filigree tannins, a slight salty tang at the back of the mouth, long, persistent and a little spicy towards the finish. Wonderful. Tasted January 2011.

(racked three days ago) Medium dark red. Knockout perfumed nose combines dark berries, lilac, rose petal and minerals; distinctly purple in character. Then juicy, tangy and sharply delineated for the year; very ripe but with strong Chambolle character. Finishes with outstanding palate-saturating perfume and terrific peppery lift. Whole bunches (this one was vinified with 50% whole clusters) can give an ethereal quality to a wine and help to counteract a tendency toward heaviness, notes Roumier, adding that the stems also absorb some alcohol. It was fascinating to compare this to the village Chambolle, which showed virtually no peppery element and was more dominated by the very ripe vintage character.
