Tasting Notes and Scores
Reduction flattens the nose to the point that it is unreadable. By contrast there is excellent freshness and intensity to the big-bodied flavors that possess robust tannins and impressive power on the punchy finish that is austere, serious and impressively long. There is an abundance of dry extract that coats the palate and while this is on the awkward side today the underlying material is so good that this should come together in time though I underscore that plenty of it will be necessary. Drink 2028+.

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Cuvée des Merles Grand Cru has a slight reduction on the nose that will disappear after racking. The palate is clean and fresh with small dark cherries, a touch of blueberry, good acidity and fine tension on the finish. This keeps the character of Charmes-Chambertin and offers a fine purity and elegance. It just does not possess quite the same convincing depth and breadth of Laurent's other 2013 Grand Crus at this prenatal moment. Drink 2016-2035.
