Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets is very promising, wafting from the glass with an ethereal bouquet of rose petals, orange rind and red berries, framed by a deft application of oak. Medium to full-bodied, pretty and fine-boned, it's bright and perfumed, with beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a mineral finish.

The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has an intriguing nose, more savory, almost meatier than the preceeding Fremiet, yet still well defined with ferrous notes surfacing with time. The palate is well balanced with supple tannins. This is very lithe in the mouth, velvety smooth with a rounded, generous finish. Maybe other vintages show a little more nerve, although it does have exceedingly good length.

From the upper (Dessus) part. Fairly young vines planted in 1999 and 2002. Family had 43 ares and in 2013 he bought another 20 ares almost – still being replanted (they plant turnips etc to regenerate the soil and leave them there to provide humus), having been uprooted in 2018. Cask sample. Deep and flavourful, and less exuberant than the Frémiets. Sweet fruit. Very slight bitterness on the end. A little timid for the moment. (JR)
