2017 Domaine Guyon, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a more intense nose than Berthaut-Gerbet's, offering black cherry, briar, smoke and crushed stone aromas with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, plenty of black cherry and blueberry fruit, fine volume and a touch of white pepper toward the finish. This actually grows in the glass. It might be too modern in style for those seeking traditional Pinot Noir, but I love it. Proper Grand Cru. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

From an old-vine parcel just below the Château, next to Jean-Nicolas Méo's holdings, the 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with a classy bouquet of warm spices, rose petals, incense, raspberries, cassis and orange rind. On the palate, it's full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with a deep core, rich structuring tannins and a long, lingering finish. This is a powerful Clos Vougeot that transcends the vintage.
