Tasting Notes and Scores
Revisited from bottle, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jeunes Rois wafts from the glass with aromas of red berries, spices, loamy soil and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with lively acids and a nicely concentrated core of vibrant fruit, it's framed by powdery tannins and concludes with a long, nicely defined finish.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jeunes Rois has a fragrant and floral bouquet, with zesty red berry fruit, hints of blood orange and a light lavender scent that percolates through. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and tart red fruit—Morello cherries and crushed strawberry—that carry through the almost-candied finish. Very seductive in style, perhaps this is more a mid-term prospect, given there is less weight and grip on the finish. But, it is undeniably delicious. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

From Brochon, just below Champ. East-facing, marl soils, waves of rock with blue marl in between. Planted 1952. The vines are never water-stressed and seem very easy-going in any weather conditions, says Pierre Duroché. Tank sample. Light and fresh on the nose with real conviction on the palate. Good structure. Mineral finish. Clean, though in a relatively light idiom. (JR)
