The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru shows more reduction than its peers but underneath there is ample red fruit and a sense of terroir; it just requires time. The palate is medium-bodied with light but pliant tannins, a pretty Gevrey that exudes purity and finesse. Harmonious, poised and minerally on the finish, this is not a showstopper by any means yet there is sophistication from start to finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Domaine-owned vines from a parcel planted mostly in 1947. 100% destemmed fruit, 100% new oak. Cask sample . Very pale ruby. Red cherries and strawberries. Sweet fruit on the palate. No forceful tannins but there is concentration. This is pure essence rather than the opulence of the 2020s. Long haul? Will be rather beautiful soon. (MH)
