Tasting Notes and Scores
The 1999 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a concentrated bouquet that reflects the vintage: black plum, pressed violets and a touch of sea spray. Leathery notes surface with time. The palate is medium-bodied, the concentration offset by the bead of acidity. It is smooth in texture with a vibrant, quite sorbet-fresh finish. I love the flesh on this Chambolle—excellent. Tasted at David Pope's 1999 Burgundy horizontal at Lorne.

Medium red-ruby. Rather unforthcoming, cool nose exudes spicy, tarry and herbal scents. Chewy and firm in the mouth, with tight but intense cherry/berry fruit flavors and firm backbone; slightly austere but not dry. Here the harmonious, mounting tannins are nicely buffered by the wine material. Finishes with sneaky persistence.
