2016 Chateau Marquis de Terme 4eme Cru Classe, Margaux

Full, dense and chewy yet with a subtle minerally character, plenty of elegant dark fruit and a savory finish. Long.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose of the 2016 Marquis de Terme is earthy with damp soil and forest floor over a core of black and red currants, tobacco and bay leaves plus a waft of garrigue. The palate is medium-bodied, refreshing and softly textured with juicy fruit.

The 2016 Marquis de Terme offers tremendous up-front intensity and lushness. Some of that intensity tapers off a bit on the mid-palate and into the finish, but there is nevertheless plenty of depth. The darker side of Margaux emerges in a flavor profile redolent of black cherry, plum, lavender spice, licorice and sweet tobacco. This is an especially plush, dense style but it works, and nicely. Blended of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 17 months in 30% new French oak, the 2016 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur has a deep garnet-purple color and gives up gregarious scents of chocolate-covered cherries, black raspberries and cassis with hints of violets and cinnamon stick plus an underbrush hint. Deep cherry. Fragrant with sweet dark-red and black fruit and a touch of oak sweetness. Firm, chewy, not trying to charm at the moment but it’s all in place, just needs to open and blossom. (JH)
