2000 Chateau Haut-Bailly Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2000
Region: Bordeaux, Pessac-Leognan
% Alcohol: 12.5

An estate that is at once both truly historic and very forward-thinking, under the ownership of the American Wilmers family and stewardship of Veronique Sanders, Haut Bailly has been producing wines of incredible quality for the past 10-15 years – although of course their history goes back way, way further than this. In fact the estate has some of the oldest vines, and one of the largest proportions of old vines, of any estate in the region. These old vines are all-important as the deep, complex root structures allows the vines to search out the rainwater left deep in the soils by winter and Spring rains, keeping the vines hydrated and fully operational even during hot dry summers.

Tasting Notes and Scores

97 JA-I

The ruby colour retains a vibrant core, aromatics flirting with tertiary, softened raspberry and brambled blackberry fruits, campfire and grilled cedar smoke, this is balanced and effortless while building in concentration through the glass, layering up with pulses of black pepper, rosemary, oyster shell, pomegranate and mandarin. The 2000 vintage took its time but it is now seriously in its stride. Harvest September 13 to October 11. Denis Dubourdieu consultant, Véronique Sanders director and CEO as of this vintage. 50% new oak.

The 2000 Château Haut-Bailly is a clear step up over the 1998 and 1999, offering medium to full-bodied richness as well as wonderful purity in its darker currants, tobacco, chocolate, and graphite-like aromas and flavors. It’s concentrated and powerful, yet most of the baby fat has fallen away, and this is a classic Haut-Bailly (despite being a more Merlot-shifted blend) that has ripe, polished tannins, a seamless mouthfeel, and a great finish.

Excellent saturated medium ruby. Aromatic nose of blackcurrant, licorice, tar and smoky oak. Sappy and concentrated; at once fleshy and delineated, with tactile, very primary fruit flavors. Implodes on the palate now, but will be explosive later. Finishes with a powerful tannic spine and excellent subtle persistence. A very classy Haut-Bailly that likely to be long-lived.

The 2000 Haut-Bailly has a well defined bouquet with red berry fruit, earthy tones, touches of melted tar and leather. This seems fully mature but still offers plenty of vigour. The palate has surprising acidity and quite sharp on the entry. Fresh but unapologetically, it is a little rustic with a ferrous, slightly dry finish. This is a fine, mature Haut-Bailly that just seems a touch more developed than I anticipated. Tasted at the Haut-Bailly vertical at the château.

-Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide No 7

Patience will be rewarded with this style of Bordeaux that typifies restraint and subtlety. The deep ruby-colored 2000 is an impressive youthful Haut-Bailly. It offers endearing notes of black cherries, raspberries, and currants mixed with tobacco smoke, soil overtones, and subtle wood. The acidity is low, the tannin is present, and the overall quality is pure and well-balanced. This is a classic example of finesse and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

Glowing crimson. Fresh, slightly light, certainly aromatic. Resolved and approachable. Very Graves and flirtatious and not at all heavy or sweet. At a very good stage now. (JR)

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot. Deep colour but mature with a brick edge. Ripe and quite intense. Even a little brooding. Dark fruits with a streak of graphite. Palate quite racy with Graves minerality and freshness. Still flexing some muscle with a grainy quality to the tannins. Clean, dry, mouth-cleansing finish. (JL)
