Tasting Notes and Scores
A brilliant effort for this vintage, yields were a mere 10 hectoliters per hectare in 2008 and the result is only 8,000 bottles produced. Opulent, fleshy and full-bodied, this wine has reigned in the excruciatingly high level of tannins, but the 15% alcohol gives it loads of glycerin as well as a chewy mouthfeel. Inky/purple-colored and super-concentrated with relatively civilized tannins, this stunning 2008 should be accessible in 3-5 years (atypical for Clos de Sarpe) and drink well for 30+. - Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #194 - May 2011)

Deep garnet colored, the 2008 Clos de Sarpe has a nose that is wonderfully ripe and decadent with baked plums, kirsch and Black Forest cake notions over hints of star anise, incense, char-grilled meats and unsmoked cigar. Medium-bodied with incredible freshness and minerality coming through on the palate, it features wonderful red fruit accents and spicy sparks in the mouth with a long, mineral-laced finish.

Good medium saturated ruby. High-toned, confectionery aromas of Valrhona chocolate and porty raisin. Huge, sweet and rather unrefined, with the high-toned character following through in the mouth. Slightly shrieking acidity contributes to the wine's rustic quality. Finishes with serious tannic clout. Will this outsized wine magically be transformed into a (200-pound) swan? Not recommended for the faint of heart.
