2008 Chateau Canon Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2008
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
% Alcohol: 14

Located on the revered Saint-Émilion limestone plateau, Chateau Canon is one of the appellation’s outstanding Premier Grand Cru Classés. Originally a walled “clos” called Clos St Martin, the then 13ha estate was bought by naval officer Jacques Kanon in 1760, from whom, it is suggested, the chateau would later take its name. Fast forward to 1919 and the estate came into the hands of the Fournier family who invested heavily and were responsible for some of the spectacular successes of the early to mid-part of the 20th century before the quality of the wines and reputation of the chateau slowly declined. It wasn’t until 1996 that it was finally sold to the current owners, Maison Chanel. It took almost a decade of revitalisation of the soil, the vines and the chai before a semblance of its former glory returned; since when, under the industry and skill of John Kolosa then subsequently Nicolas Audebert, Chateau Canon has gone from strength to strength culminating in the magical run of 2015-2019.

Tasting Notes and Scores

The 2008 Canon has a simple bouquet compared to the riveting 2015 that I tasted alongside at the property, however, you cannot begrudge this Saint Émilion that offers attractive black fruit, a pinch of pepper, iodine and spice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, red and black fruit mixed with baking powder and a slight savoriness that comes through on the finish. Impressive length here: a fine if maybe slightly "uncouth" Canon that probably needs another year in bottle. (Tasted at the château and at BI Wine & Spirit’s annual vertical tasting.) - www.vinous.com, February 2018

Although reserved and shut down following bottling, the 2008 exhibits a dense plum/ruby/purple color, abundant tannin, an unmistakable minerality and a long finish despite its structured, backward, medium-bodied mouthfeel. Sweet blue and black fruits have to be coaxed from the glass. Cellar it for 5-7 years and enjoy it over the following 20-25.

This appears to be the finest wine made under the relatively recent ownership of the Wertheimer brothers (who also own the haute couture house of Chanel). Sweet raspberry, blue fruit, crushed rock, and acacia flower characteristics are followed by a fresh, lively, full-bodied wine that offers an alliance of power, substance, and finesse. With good purity, texture, and length, this beauty will require patience as the tannins, while sweet and velvety, are noticeable. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025.

Good full red-ruby. Aromas of dried cherry and cedary, nutty oak lifted by a floral element. Flavors of cherry pit and spices are given good cut by pronounced acidity. Finishes with dusty tannins that turn a tad dry in the glass. Will this gain in sweetness and personality with bottle aging?

Tart blackcurrant fruits. Juicy on the palate, but with a bitter, restrained character that leaves an austere savouryness on the finish. Quite a tough cookie, but there's no doubting the intent of the style as a traditional, old-fashioned bordeaux. (RH)

Tasted blind. Slightly weak crimson. Some fruit-cake evolution on the nose. Minerals and just enough fruit ripeness. Chalky finish. (JR)
